A remarkable remodelling to deliver bespoke lifestyle spaces

The Problem

Our clients, Karen and Andrew, loved the features of their period home but the property’s limitations and lack of natural light didn’t suit how they wanted to live in and use the space.

The Wishlist

The clients loved to entertain, so wanted a generous and inviting space to enjoy with friends and family. They also had an art collection they wanted to be able to display.

With a keen interest in architecture and interior design, the clients wanted a space that made better use of natural light and improved the connection to the pleasant back garden.

Because the garden increased in width along one side of the house, the clients hoped to use this space to substantially enlarge the footprint of their home.

The homeowners also wanted the property to have a much greater sense of arrival, as the existing front door wasn’t easy to find as you approached the house.

The Solution

To deliver our clients’ dream home, we remodelled the entire ground floor - from front to back, extending it to the side and rear.

During the live design session, we suggested adding materials, light, and perspective to connect the front of this home through to its rear garden.

We established a line of sight from the front door to the garden using a wedge-shaped extension to create a fabulous sense of perspective and space. This area encapsulated a huge bespoke kitchen, dining and living space flooded with natural light.

Lighting the extension and remodelling the house was an important factor in creating different zones within the home. To maximise how this space is experienced and enjoyed, we collaborated with talented lighting designer Sian Baxter.

To give the property entrance greater presence, we installed a new large timber pivot door from Urban Door Fronts. We also introduced zinc cladding, which wrapped around from the door canopy to the rear of the home, so the scheme flows seamlessly from start to finish.

The Results

The new stunning kitchen provides plenty of space to cook in and entertain, with modern flush doors, clean lines and subtle texture that keep the design contemporary and sleek.

We also designed and installed a bespoke media unit which creates a focal point for the living area.

The fresh, neutral palette provides the perfect backdrop for our clients to display their favourite pieces of art and the artefacts they’ve collected from around the world.

Upstairs, the project included remodelling the first-floor bathroom to include a luxurious free-standing bath and walk-in shower. Using the vaulted ceiling and installing a large roof light allowed us to flood natural light into this otherwise dark room.

A stylish ‘his and hers’ vanity unit creates ample storage to keep the bathroom clutter-free, and large format tonal tiles create effortless luxury that will remain fresh for years to come.

The clients love their redesigned home, and the opportunity for entertainment and storytelling it provides - so much so that they regularly participate in the annual open house RIBA architecture festival in London.

Completely exceeded our expectations

We first contacted Bespoke Living after being recommended their services by a friend. We wanted to design a home that involved thinking “outside the box” but we weren’t sure how to approach this or what was possible at our property. From the outset, Bespoke Living AIC completely exceeded our expectations. They came in with fresh ideas and used our unusual shaped plot to maximise the size and scope of our extension. From the very beginning, everyone was professional, knowledgeable, and caring. The team handled everything, including planning permission and dealing with other professionals like party-wall surveyors and structural engineers – so we had a one-stop-shop for all our needs. They listened to our requirements and suggested practical solutions to make our daily lives that bit easier. Their expertise really shone through when they specified wrap-around zinc cladding which gives our home the “wow” factor we were looking for.  We now enjoy living in our home, in which every detail is right, every design is faultless, and we no longer complain about the size of our house! Highly recommended.
