The Problem
This property has been built around its split level topography. Its original design and layout meant that the rear of the property was dark and unwelcoming. Our challenge was to transform this space by filling it with natural light, connecting it to the outdoors and creating room for a growing family.
The Wishlist
Split level properties have their own challenges and it’s essential that any addition is added seamlessly. Our clients’ brief was to create a kitchen and entertaining space at the rear of this property. This new extension was to feel light and spacious and open out on to the garden. It was important to this family to have a space that they could enjoy every day as well as being a great space for entertaining.
The Solution
Our solution was to create a double height extension, built around a concept of framing the views outside. We created balance and symmetry by building the extension across the entire width of the rear. The design is sympathetic to the period of the property whilst our use of wood cladding complements the neighbouring foliage. To flood in natural light and create stunning views of the trees we incorporated a large bespoke feature window facing the mezzanine level. At ground level we added bi-fold doors that seamlessly connect the indoor space with the garden. This combined with the use of several roof lights, creates an impressive large, airy and bright space.
The Results
Your spirits lift with this new double-height mezzanine space, as you are led in to an area filled with natural light. The expansive windows frame the natural beauty of the trees and bring the outside in. While the large modern, light and bright space with easy outside access is perfect for family living and entertaining.
