Harnessing light and space creates a stunning open-plan area to enjoy with family and friends

The Problem

Our recently retired clients, Damien and Sali, wanted to create a space they could entertain in and, more importantly, bring the whole family together for special occasions.

The fragmented layout of their split-level home meant the rooms didn’t provide the right connection and flow, so most of the time they only used a fraction of the available space.

The Wishlist

The clients wanted to bring a better quality of light, an enhanced lifestyle and a higher-end finish to the house they’d originally built in the 1990s.

The kitchen was very important to them and they wanted to create a more relaxing and enjoyable space to cook in and entertain.

They also wanted to be able to enjoy more of the garden and fabulous view from the house and improve the access to their outdoor space.

The Solution

While our client initially wanted to extend their home to create more space, through our consultation and live design session we were able to show them an alternative solution.

By opening up and merging three living spaces and extending the existing balcony, we highlighted how the project would more than exceed their brief, and avoid unnecessary construction work and costs.

Our solution created a contemporary open-plan space linking the front of the house to the rear, bringing in natural light, increasing the link to the outdoors and maximising the fantastic view.

The kitchen, dining and living area was zoned in this space through finishes, function and lighting.

The key architectural features include slimline triple sliding doors leading out onto the balcony and full-width extra height roof lights, flooding the space with natural light.

A uniform single-floor finish runs from the front of the property, through to the living spaces and external balcony to the rear, creating a clean and continuous flow.

Installing a Control 4 system to automate the sound, vision, lighting, and automatic curtains to shade the slimline doors, was an important factor in the success of the space.

The Results

From a series of disjointed spaces, the first floor of this home now delivers a large contemporary open-plan space, ideally suited for connected and effortless living.

With the kitchen area an essential part of our client's everyday life, for extra convenience we created a distinct breakfast area on one side of the bespoke large kitchen island.

Re-orienting the kitchen towards the balcony created a focal point and allowed our clients to enjoy the amazing view whilst dining with friends and family.

During this project, we worked with the client’s interior designer, Debbie Drew, to specify the interior finishes.

This project highlighted the importance of integrating architecture, interiors and construction, and was the catalyst for creating our own interiors team and forming Bespoke Living AIC - with a design philosophy based on collaboration.

Damien and Sali love their new space and the lifestyle this property delivers. The constant access to the view and valley beyond, and the increased natural light bring them joy all year round.

They’ve recommended us to several friends, who have been so impressed with their new space that one of our latest projects, ‘Cattwg Cottage’, was commissioned as a result.

Our space now suits us perfectly

We could not be happier that we chose Bespoke Living AIC for our project and we now recommend them to everyone we know. Prior to contacting the Bespoke team, we felt our house just wasn’t working for us. We wanted a more contemporary open-plan space and thought that an extension was the solution. Brian and his team came up with several layout options that meant we didn’t have to extend. Their expert knowledge convinced us that by simply merging three rooms together and extending the existing balcony, we’d be provided with a fantastic open-plan living space. This is exactly what was achieved and their care, attention to detail and insight proved invaluable and saved us from making a costly mistake. Everything was managed in-house, from our initial live design session to the completion of building work on-site, which was professionally executed by the Bespoke Living construction team. The whole process was smooth, simple and hassle-free. We now have a space that suits us perfectly, so much so that we’re considering inviting Bespoke Living back to redesign another area of our home!
